Song of Songs 5:16 NASB95 “His mouth is full of sweetness. And he is wholly desirable. This is my beloved and this is my friend, O daughters of Jerusalem.”
The bride has spent 6 verses attempting to describe the groom but she fails to give him the glory for which he deserves.
She finishes by attempting to summarize him as a whole.
His mouth is full of sweetness. Sweetness refers to honey. The TWOT suggest that it is used figuratively for gracious and pleasant things including God’s Word, the wisdom of the Old Testament, and the speech of a friend. Waters may also be understood as sweet, the rest of peaceful sleep, the fruit of an apple tree, the light of day. This and much more represent the grace and mercy that come from the self-breathed voice of God.
She continues in her summary saying, He is wholly desirable. Desirable describes the longing for something that is emotionally, physically, and spiritually, required but is absolutely and completely unattainable. It reveals the nervous feeling of joy and excitement felt in the pit of your stomach when something completely unattainable is suddenly in your presence. Being so thirsty in a desert place and suddenly seeing an oasis. You refuse to give up and you use every bit of strength that you can muster and after expending all of your energy you fill a drop of water on your tongue. It is the picture of the rich man begging for Abraham to send Lazarus for a drop of water to cool his mouth.
This is the summary of her attempt to describe the indescribable Lord.
She confesses her need for him. It is not just that I want his sweetness, but instead there is no life apart from it.
Then she says, "This is my beloved and this is my friend."
He has all of my affection and is my only true companion. He has never wanted anything but righteousness for me.
The description of the bridegroom.
Oh, the effort to describe what words can not. A life given so life can be given! An unstained life wiping away all the stains of our life. This and so much more is the sweetness, that is desirable beyond explanation, because He is beyond explanation. He is the bridegroom of the church. So you must be part of the church, the body of Christ, to receive the sweetness you long for.
Founded on the rock of the realization of the Truth that is given from the Father. That Truth is that, Jesus is the Christ the Son of the Living God!
Yet with all this said He is still indescribable.
He is my Lord. Is He yours?
