Imagine a person who wants what is best for his family, so to avoid the decline of morality he takes them to a deserted island where he plans on raising them away from the immorality of civilization.

They have plenty of fish to eat and edible plants but no drinking water. He tries to capture rainwater but can not get enough to survive. He then decides he needs to dig a well to find water. He gets up every morning and begins to dig for water. At the end of the day, having not reached water, he goes to bed to start anew tomorrow. Over time his children begin to die of dehydration. His wife dies last and he is alone still digging for water. When they find his dead body years later they see thousands of holes dug all around the island each no more than 6 feet deep. Had he just kept digging in one hole, he would have found water at 10 feet, but instead he started over every day.

We say this is a silly story. Surely the man was smart enough to know better than to start over. He would have known to go back to the original hole and keep digging. Yet many people do this in their spiritual lives for themselves and their family. They preach and teach salvation by Jesus but they never dig any further into the word to realize all of Jesus' teachings. They never learn teachings on how to live, on how to care for others in need, on how to praise God, or how to be obedient to Him. They never study His word on the effects of sin, or what sin is. They will live satisfied that Jesus saves unfortunately never getting to enjoy the peace of Jesus as Lord. I hear and meet so many people who say they are a Christian but have never read the God-breathed, Holy inerrant word of the Lord, to find out who He is and what He desires for and from them. Oh, how they miss out.

Think about this. You want to become wealthy so the wealthiest man in the world today (Elon Musk) says I can guarantee everyone who follows me can be wealthy. He says I have personally written a book that explains how to be wealthy like me. I will personally hand this book to anyone who comes to me and asks me for it. So you go to him and say I want to be wealthy I want to follow you. He introduces himself to you and hands you the book. You take the book home and the next day you go to Elon and do the same thing over again. At the end of the year you have 365 books, and you have shaken his hand 365 times. He knows you by name and face but you are worth no more than you were when you started. Because you never read the book. You can't even sell the books because anyone who wants a copy can get it free from him. You say well that is ridiculous. Just go to him once and then read the book and do what it says. Then you will be wealthy. You are correct.

However, Jesus offers the wealth of eternal life and we won't read and obey His word, His book!

In fact, let me share with you one verse from His book. Hebrews 6:1 NASB95 Therefore leaving the elementary teaching about the Christ, let us press on to maturity, not laying again a foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith toward God.

He is saying don't start over every day at the beginning. Instead, start at the beginning with a relationship with Jesus and then every day build on that foundation. Get to know Christ better every day by reading and growing in His word.

Don't dig a new well every day. Instead, keep digging on THE well until you find water. That is the way. You can't read the whole route for your trip on one page you have to scroll or unfold the map until you follow the way to your destination.

Another verse says John 14:6 NASB95 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.

Get to really know Him by reading His word.

If you keep reading you will find out that in Psalm 119: 105 (the Psalmist says). Your word is a lamp to my feet And a light to my path.

You can have salvation by Grace through faith, but you have to spend time with Him, listening to Him, (His Words) (the Holy Bible), to truly get to know and enjoy Him now!
