Proverbs 3:1-4 NASB95 My son, do not forget my teaching, But let your heart keep my commandments; For length of days and years of life And peace they will add to you. Do not let kindness and truth leave you; Bind them around your neck, Write them on the tablet of your heart. So you will find favor and good repute In the sight of God and man.
Never underestimate the importance of teaching your child the righteous ways of God from an early age. We should start at the beginning of life and never stop. We have all heard Proverbs 22:6 NASB95 Train up a child in the way he should go, Even when he is old he will not depart from it.
What we miss is the word child, it means infancy to adolescence. Many people start at adolescences and miss out because they didn't start early enough.
The writer of our text explains to the child, "do not forget my teaching." We should focus on early teaching and explaining the importance of that teaching.
We know, as they grow they will stray, but we keep reminding them, "let your heart keep my commandments." God gives us commandments not suggestions. We are not required to follow them but if we do follow His commandments then He will provide the blessings. "Length of days and years of life And peace they will add to you."
Length of days. There is no night in heaven for God is the light. Years of life show that life in the presence of God in Heaven is unending. Peace is felt in the presence of the Holy Spirit and increases in the presence of the Godhead Three in One. Obedience to God shows us the Savior, and faith in the Savior brings the Grace of Salvation. This comes much easier when God's righteousness is taught early and continually with loving reminders of Him.
Examples of reminders are suggested to the child. Do not let kindness and truth leave you; Bind them around your neck, Write them on the tablet of your heart.
When I was a child, I would arrive home from school before my parents. Therefore I needed a key to get into our house. As a boy, I tended to lose things. In order to make sure I didn't lose the house key my mom made me a necklace of yarn with the key on it. I wore it around my neck and every day when I needed it, the key was always there. I learned my alphabet and my numbers early. They are embedded in the center-most part of my being because they were taught to me as I was still being formed in that child (infancy-adolescent) age. Oh, how I wish scripture were taught with that same desire in children.
Studies have shown that for dementia patients these early teachings are some of the last things to be forgotten. God commands us to teach of Him with more passion and even earlier than everything else. Imagine if as an infant the love of God was ingrained above the love of parents. This can be done through parental love as God is our Father. When this is done the child will find favor and good repute In the sight of God and man.
Man might later hate but the child, even when he is old he will not depart from it. GOD IS THE MOST IMPORTANT LESSON, shouldn't we teach HIM early and often?
If your parents missed on this, instead of blaming them, turn to Christ. Place your faith in Him and by the grace of God you will be born again. John 3:3 NASB95 Jesus answered and said to him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.”
When you are born again, start learning through the Word of God that, Jesus is the way and never stop. In doing this, many Christians even at the very end of their physical life, are still able to quote the Word of God.
The Word became flesh and He is the Way, Truth, and Life. No one comes to the Father but by Him!
