Leviticus 2:11 NASB95 ‘No grain offering, which you bring to the LORD, shall be made with leaven, for you shall not offer up in smoke any leaven or any honey as an offering by fire to the LORD.
The grain offering is a freewill offering. It is given freely. This points to Jesus, who freely gave Himself as an offering for us. When you bring this offering it needs to be without leaven (representing sin). Jesus came without sin. We can see how this offering continues to point to Jesus. It also says it is not offered up with honey. Honey represents a sweetness to make it more desirable. It is like attempting to dress up what is pure. We know scripture teaches us that Jesus came as a normal man. Not a king with wealth to make Him sweeter to the people. He was pure. Isaiah 53:2 NASB95 For He grew up before Him like a tender shoot, And like a root out of parched ground; He has no stately form or majesty That we should look upon Him, Nor appearance that we should be attracted to Him.
So we can see the amazing illustration of the grain offering as it points to Jesus. However, we can also see how it gives us guidance.
The grain offering is an offering of service. They worked to grow the grain. They worked to prepare the grain. Any person, whether poor or rich, is capable of a grain offering. However, it is not a tithe, as the tithe is required. The freewill grain offering is given above the tithe, with a desire to bring to God, a gift of ourselves, that is above and beyond what He requires.
Do you have this desire?
It is an offering that is prepared at home and brought to God at the tabernacle or, today, the church. We see in our text that you come prepared to give of this offering. Don't come to church and say well I think I will give $10 dollars more today as my offering. Preparation should be done at home in prayer, allowing God to convict with the guidance of the Holy Spirit, what you can offer above your tithe. This should come with Joy.
They did not prepare their grain offering with grumbling as it wasn't required.
It is also an offering of purity. It is not to be given in sin (with leaven). While tithes or first fruit offerings have no such requirement because they are commanded. When you offer above, don't think that the offering will cleanse you of the sin that you are living in. You can not buy God. Sin debt was paid by Christ alone. If you give above what is required, whether in service or in money, but do so while living in sin. You are getting nothing in return. He desires your purity not your offering. Also, don't attempt to sweeten your offering with honey. Many do this by making sure others know what they have given. If you do this you have your reward.
There is a wealth of guidance in all scripture. Do not miss out on the blessings of its understanding by thinking it doesn't apply to you.
To sum up the life application.
Do you tithe? It is required.
Do you desire to serve freely, just because you love God?
Do you prepare to serve at home with joy?
Do you seek to live and give in purity, not for any other reason?
These are things you do, not to earn God's love but because of it!
It paints a beautiful picture of Jesus!
