Proverbs 18:10 NASB95 The name of the LORD is a strong tower; The righteous runs into it and is safe.
The Führerbunker, is just one of hundreds of bunkers built throughout time that have failed to provide protection. In this great bunker, Hitler committed suicide rather than be captured. During the Cold war many people sought to build shelters underground in case of a nuclear attack. In other instances, people built towers with windows at the top from which they dropped large stones and shot weapons at those who might attack.
Man is always searching for ways to prepare and protect himself from others during times of distress. This is still happening today. Everything from bomb shelters to storm shelters and food storage containers has been constructed to protect people from the dangers of this world.
There is nothing wrong with preparedness. In fact, it is wise. The problem is when we seek protection from all of these man-made solutions while never seeking protection from the maker of man. Our text says "The name of the LORD is a strong tower."
There is so much protection offered in the LORD, that even His name provides protection. We see in Acts that when the name of Jesus is used by a believer, demons must obey. Acts 16:18 NASB95 She continued doing this for many days. But Paul was greatly annoyed, and turned and said to the spirit, “I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her!” And it came out at that very moment.
However, we must notice that this protection is not necessarily provided to the unbelieving sinner. Our text says, "The righteous runs into it and is safe." Notice it specifies the righteous (repentant, believer, and follower). We have an example of seven unrepentant, non believing, men who used the name of Jesus to attempt to control a demon. We see the demon's response in Acts 19:15 NASB95 And the evil spirit answered and said to them, “I recognize Jesus, and I know about Paul, but who are you?” Instead of the power and protection of the LORD, they experienced the danger of calling on Him when not following, believing, or repenting. Acts 19:16 NASB95 And the man, in whom was the evil spirit, leaped on them and subdued all of them and overpowered them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded.
So, in conclusion, a righteous person who goes to the LORD seeking security is safe. They have no need to fear or worry. They find no security in man-made items but in the one who made man. However, those who are not righteous need to understand that all their preparation does no good if they do not have the security and safety of the name of the LORD!
