1 Peter 2:24 NASB95 and He Himself bore our sins in His body on the cross, so that we might die to sin and live to righteousness; for by His wounds you were healed.
In 1994 a young American man was sentenced to six lashes with a cane for stealing road signs and vandalizing ten cars in Singapore. There was a great uproar that this punishment was too severe for the crime.
Yet seldom do we as Christians spend time contemplating or evaluating the severity of the scourging, the mocking, the exhaustion, the excruciating pain of open flesh rubbing against the rough wood of the cross. Seldom do people reflect on the struggle of not being able to take in a breath or the thirst of hours spent on a cross with a dry mouth attempting to draw the slightest moisture from the air.
Seldom do people think of all of this suffering taking place in a person who has NEVER in any way sinned!
Yet in 1994, there was outrage that a young man guilty of a crime would receive six lashes, which was later dropped to four lashes with a cane.
Outrage over punishment for sin while all the time it seems the world almost ignores the only completely innocent man suffering, unlike any before or since. Plus he was totally abandoned for the first and only time in eternity past, present, and future, as He cried out. "ELI, ELI, LAMA SABACHTHANI?” that is, “MY GOD, MY GOD, WHY HAVE YOU FORSAKEN ME?” Then He gave up His life. For three days, He lay in a borrowed grave, completely engulfed in death, and then rose to life. Yet the most amazing part is He did this for YOU!
And He Himself bore our sins in His body on the cross, so that we might die to sin and live to righteousness; for by His wounds you were healed.
By His wounds YOU were healed! So that we might DIE to SIN and LIVE to RIGHTEOUSNESS.
Yet we look at this as nothing, while outrage was given over 4 lashes of a cane to a guilty man.
The truth is I deserve those lashes and so much more but there is NO GREATER NEWS THAN,
1 Corinthians 15:3-4 NASB95 For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures.
For this, I am outraged at myself and broken in thankfulness to my Savior Jesus!
What about you?
Let's be outraged by our sin that was laid upon our Savior. Let's desire that all sin is recognized as leading to death and live in His righteousness. Don't be outraged by punishment; instead, be thankful that a Savior has undeservedly taken it for us.
Love Bro. Scott
