Matthew 12:47 Someone said to Him, “Behold, Your mother and Your brothers are standing outside seeking to speak to You.”
Jesus was speaking with His disciples when someone came up and told Him that His family was outside seeking to speak to Him. Jesus, as always, was seeking to teach people about God the Father, and He used this visit from His family to do just that.
As the person told Him your mother and brothers are outside. He started to teach about the family of God. He ended His teaching with this. Matthew 12:49-50 And stretching out His hand toward His disciples, He said, “Behold My mother and My brothers! For whoever does the will of My Father who is in heaven, he is My brother and sister and mother.”
Many have taken this with a Satanic twist, saying it teaches that Jesus turned His back on His mother and brothers, but the rest of scripture proves this thought as a lie from Satan. Jesus assigned a caregiver for His mother at His death (John), and His brothers became part of the family of God, even leading the church and writing the words of God for us today.
What this text is telling us is the importance of the church upon each other. Believers and followers of God are a family. We are a family just like the biological family. We should treat each other as we would our family. This is because they are our family. We should care for their needs. We should love and serve them. Plus we should teach them and encourage their growth in the Kingdom of God. This is not to say that we don't care for our family that is outside of the church. Our effort should be to live and teach them into the church with us. Sometimes that means showing them how much importance we give to the family of God.
The truth of the matter is that we will spend eternity with our church family in the presence of God the Father. If we want our biological family to be a part of this family too, then we need to show them the importance of God and our church family. We do this by being an integral part of the family meetings and the work of God. Jesus taught this when He said; whoever does the will of My Father who is in heaven, he is My brother and sister and mother.”
We see from the rest of scripture this worked as Jesus' biological family became part of His Kingdom family in the church.
I pray we love our families into a joint family as they become one. Our biological family joining our kingdom family in the local church as a single family of God. Doing His will together for all eternity!
