Joshua 22:34 NASB95 The sons of Reuben and the sons of Gad called the altar Witness; “For,” they said, “it is a witness between us that the LORD is God.”
The Israelites on the east side of the Jordan wanted something to be a witness between them and their brothers on the other side. A witness that said we too worship the Lord God. The Israelites on the west side wondered why they did this and went to ask. Then it was explained to them. This is so you will know that we follow God!
As I thought of this, I wondered if we have a desire to show our brothers that we worship the Lord God?
One thing that we are called to do as a witness, is Baptism. It is our visual witness to show the world that we have become followers of Christ. Why do so many people have an aversion to Baptism? Many refuse to be baptized when going from one denomination to another. They say things like, if I do it again, that means the first time wasn't real. The answer to that is no. Baptism has no effect on salvation; it is a proclamation externally of what has happened to you internally. It is a witness of what God has done for you. He has saved you and me. I want the world to see I have died to sin, I have been buried to my old life, and now in Christ I am raised to walk in a new life as a child of God.
Another is to share our testimony of Christ's salvation in us with others. We do this verbally by explaining the difference between our life before Christ and our life WITH Christ. Many people share their testimony without mentioning the salvation that Christ offered and that they received. While this is a testimony it is not a witness to Salvation in Christ. We must remember that our witness is to Christ's Lordship and Salvation we have received.
We also share our testimony by living a Christian life. These two ways of sharing are a much stronger witness when they are combined.
Have you built a witness to show the world that you are a follower of Christ?
The best witness is one that causes people to ask Why are you doing this. That way, you can continue to show your witness to them, in explanation.
