The account of Gideon and his 300 men is one of the most well-shared accounts in the Bible. The Lord has Gideon dwindle down the number in the army to a mere 300 to go up against 135,000. He did this to keep people from diverting any of the glory to Gideon just like men always do. I have heard people speak of the great idea or battle plan Gideon had. The 300 men each with a torch in one hand and a horn in the other plus yelling made Midian think there was a large army about to attack. So glory is given to Gideon. Yet scripture says in Judges 7:22 When they blew 300 trumpets, the Lord set the sword of one against another even throughout the whole army; and the army fled as far as Beth-shittah toward Zererah, as far as the edge of Abel-meholah, by Tabbath.
Notice that it was the Lord who caused them to fight against each other with their swords. The Lord had the victory, not Gideon and not his brilliant plan. It was 100% all completely the Lord. In fact, in the next chapter, it says this. Judges 8:10 Now Zebah and Zalmunna were in Karkor, and their armies with them, about 15,000 men, all who were left of the entire army of the sons of the east; for the fallen were 120,000 swordsmen.
The Lord destroyed 120,000 men by having them fight amongst themselves.
God loves using us for His glory and we in our sin of pride love to seek the glory for ourselves. We must strive daily to give ALL Glory to God. This means we don't seek any for ourselves. This is tough because we live in the flesh surrounded by the fallen world but it is possible because Christians are indwelled by God the Holy Spirit. He will not force us to follow but He will guide us. We must seek daily to start off by listening to the Spirit.
Today ask God through His Spirit to guide you to give God ALL Glory! Then quietly listen to Him and watch how it leads people to God. It is a simple act but an amazingly powerful witness tool.
How disappointed God must be when He desires to use us and then we seek to steal His Glory! Any glory we receive has been stolen from God.
