Judges 11:24 NASB95 ‘Do you not possess what Chemosh your god gives you to possess? So whatever the LORD our God has driven out before us, we will possess it.
Chemosh was an idol of the Moabites. Idols draw us away from God, even though they have no power. However, at times, demons will lie and lead people to believe the idol has power. This happened with Chemosh, as the Moabites thought that killing their children would make Chemosh happy and he would give them victory in battle. However, it didn't happen. An idol has no power, and God is the Creator of all. God, Instead, of having His creation sacrifice their own children, provided a sacrifice. God's Son willingly sacrificed Himself for them. Yet being God, life and death couldn't hold Him. He rose from the dead to life everlasting.
Our text says, Do you not possess what Chemosh your god gives you to possess?
Chemosh doesn't possess anything because he is not a living being. Therefore, he can only give death. Just like all idols
However, our text continues, whatever the LORD our God has driven out before us, we will possess it.
Since Jesus defeated death and possesses life, He is the true God. He gives life to His creation who accept Him as their LORD.
Notice that LORD is in all caps, meaning it is the proper name of God, "Yahweh." This means that He is the self-existent one. Unlike an Idol that has to be made and possesses nothing but death. Yahweh, on the other hand, who was not created but has always existed, has all power and is alive. He possesses all, and gives life freely to any and all who will receive the sacrifice of Jesus as atonement for their sin. Which would you rather worship?
I agree with Joshua. "As for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.” Because only He can give life.
