Recently, I was eating lunch at a buffet-style restaurant and got what I thought was a beef steak with gravy and onions. After tasting it, I realized the nasty stuff that was in my mouth was liver and onions.
It was a rude awakening that lasted for several hours. Nothing I ate after that could remove the taste from my mouth. It was an abomination to my taste buds. Now I understand that there are people out there who like this nasty stuff, and I am sorry that you do not understand the difference between what tastes good and what tastes like the dirt from a dog pen. (or at least how I imagine it would taste.) There are certain things that even gravy and onions can't disguise.
Now, my illustration, while true, is meant to be humorous. So if you like liver, don't go getting upset. It is crazy that something that is supposed to be good for you tastes so awful. Yet something's that are poisonous to you can taste sweet. For example, while I will never try it, I understand there is a product (which I will not mention) that, while extremely poisonous, has a fruity-sweet taste. So much so that manufacturers have begun putting an extremely bitter-tasting agent into it to discourage anyone from swallowing it.
This fallen world we live in is upside down. What is good for you tastes bad and what is bad for you tastes good. So how do we know what is good and what isn't? The answer is to trust the Lord.
For example, lying is very common, yet God's word tells us it is sin. The secular world says that telling the truth tastes bad and often feels like biting your tongue while you eat. However, this is not what God's word says. Since God's Holy Word is our final authority, we need to listen to it.
Proverbs 8:7 NASB95 “For my mouth will utter truth; And wickedness is an abomination to my lips.
My mouth will utter truth. Solomon says even if it is difficult, I will speak truth because I know God says this is good. John 17:17 NASB95 “Sanctify them in the truth; Your word is truth.
May we, even when it doesn't taste good, always utter the truth.
The text also says wickedness is an abomination to my lips. Once again, Solomon speaking, says I will strive to make sure that wickedness tastes like liver to my lips. Make it disgusting in my mouth.
The great thing is the closer we get to God, the better our taste buds work. What is good is sweet like honey, and what is bad tastes like the waters of Marah, like wormwood, or lukewarm water. This tells me I have a ways to go. What about you?
David, a man after God's own heart, says in Psalm 34:1 NASB95 I will bless the LORD at all times; His praise shall continually be in my mouth.
David continues in Psalm 34:8 NASB95, O taste and see that the LORD is good; How blessed is the man who takes refuge in Him!
The closer we get to Jesus, the better the Truth will taste because He is the Truth. John 14:6 NASB95 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.
That is the truth, and oh how sweet it is!
