Nehemiah 12:45 NASB95 For they performed the worship of their God and the service of purification, together with the singers and the gatekeepers in accordance with the command of David and of his son Solomon.
This verse has so much we can learn from it. All of them have one thing in common. That is worship! You can look at it as speaking of tithing, service, obedience, being pure, protection, leadership, praise, prophecy, salvation, and even more. Yet everything in this verse has to do with worship.
We see they purposely took action in the worship. They had been out of the promised land, out of the practice of correct worship, out of fellowship, and out of Godly leadership. However, now that they were back they planned to perform (present) worship as before. Not just as before but as desired and commanded by God. They desired and sought to worship in a pure way. Undefiled by the world that they lived in. They were not willing to allow the filth of the temptations of sin, Satan, the flesh, or the world to hinder their purification or cleansing from their disobedience. Therefore, they sought to rid themselves of these temptations by submerging themselves into the service of the Lord. They joined together in fellowship of the body (what we call today the church) to rely on each other and join together in worship as God the Father and King had commanded.
The text says, in accordance with the command of David. He is the King and represents the Father who has given the command and instructions on worship.
Then the text says, and of his son Solomon. The Son is the piece of the instructions of worship which cannot be exempt from worship. Jesus is the Son who provides the salvation that enables us freedom from the bondage of sin so we can freely worship as commanded.
They give us in this verse an illustration of why, how, and the purpose of worship. Worship of God is amazing, it is required, it is needed, it is instructed, it is illustrated, it is beneficial, and it is a setting free from the stress of fallen life. Worship takes us, for a time, into the presence of God offering a glimpse of the blessing of eternal life.
Don't forsake worship. Don't forsake the sincerity of worship. Don't take lightly the importance of worship. Don't miss out on the blessing of worship, and don't mistake worship as simply singing praise to the Lord. Worship is so much more. We have seen worship in Godly fellowship, obedience, instruction, service, tithing, and even in organization. True worship is vast as long as it is directed at, in obedience to, and desiring to please, God!
So today I recommend you prepare, desire, and seek, a time of individual and corporate worship. Then look for opportunities to worship as often and as sincerely as possible
For they performed the worship of their God and the service of purification, together with the singers and the gatekeepers in accordance with the command of David and of his son Solomon.
