Love is such a complex word. Mainly because we have twisted its definition in society to a feeling minus action.
With God, who is the origin of love, it has always included action.
Because of love, God sent His Son. Because of love, Christ died while we were sinners. Because of love, God said we will keep his commandments. So love should always include action. Love is also truth, and love is righteous. It is just and it is Holy. In Isaiah 61:8, scripture says, "For I, the LORD, love justice."
There is another word that we use that shows action in love. It is kindness. It means to show favor with good deeds.
David combined these two words to describe who God is as He sings praises to Him.
Psalm 108:4 NASB95 For Your lovingkindness is great above the heavens, And Your truth reaches to the skies.
God has, is, and shows lovingkindness that is greater than the vastness of the heavens. We cannot contemplate the enormity of our universe. Even with all that science has done they still can not understand the size and complexity of the heavens. In the same way, we can not comprehend the vastness, enormity, and complexity of God's love and His kindness. To think that we can is to diminish the action of His love and the vastness of His kindness. We cannot do this even when we try. Just like science can not describe the universe. Every time they do there is a new discovery that shows that we haven't even begun to comprehend. The same goes for our God's lovingkindness! His truth is also complete and yet so vast that we, in our mortality, can not understand it. Yet at the same time, while we can't see the skies beginning and ending, we can see that it is there. This goes as well for God's truth and even more so.
We can not completely understand the heavens and the skies but we have faith and know their existence. We should even have greater faith and know the lovingkindness and truth of the God who created it all.
So, like David, let's praise Him in song and proclamation because the action of His lovingkindness is poured out on us.
His truth today is that God, has is and always will be seeking to show through actions His lovingkindness to you. The truth is also that He does this sometimes through a gentle touch, a soft voice, and a warm feeling. However, other times the actions of His lovingkindness are through a strong chastisement, a loud voice that shakes the earth, a hot wind and a door slammed in your face, saying it is time to repent and change directions.
Let's praise Him today with our lovingkindness that comes from Him, is truthful, and through His power can be proclaimed in praise and directed right back to Him.
