What makes a person great?
The answer depends on who you ask and where they get their definition of success from. In a world that is led by Satan, a person is considered great by his personal success. How much money does he or she make? How much he or she has of the things they desire. How many people of their own kind are jealous of them and want to have the things that they possess. It all has to do with you and the pride you take in pleasing yourself. You can lie, you can cheat, you can hurt others, and you can take what is not meant for you or belongs to someone else (stealing). You can make excuses and twist everything, just as long as you get what you want and are pleased with yourself. This is what makes a person great and successful in the eyes of Satan's world!
But what is greatness and success in the eyes of God and His world? Because, after all, His home is where we as Christians should desire to be. How does God define a great and successful person?
Esther 10:3 NASB95 For Mordecai the Jew was second only to King Ahasuerus, and great among the Jews and in favor with his many kinsmen, one who sought the good of his people and one who spoke for the welfare of his whole nation.
Mordecai was great among the Jews and in favor (successful) among the Jews, his kinsmen (the chosen people of God). Why was He great and successful? Because he was one who sought the good of his people and one who spoke for the welfare of his whole nation.
Mordecai did not live for himself. He lived for God and then God's people. He even taught the same thing to those he associated with. He taught the queen to be willing to sacrifice her own well-being for the good of God's people. He lived knowing that his lifestyle of focusing on God and others might cause him to be impaled on the 75-foot gallows at the house of an evil man (Haman). Haman was a man who was considered great and successful by Satan's standards.
Haman was impaled on his own gallows, and Mordecai was considered great and favorable among God's people.
So you want to be great. Whose great do you want to be? Satan's great is full of pride and focuses on you. It gives you temporary happiness, and then you, with all your pride, fall before the Great God. You will explain your Greatness, to the only one who is truly Great!
God's greatness says I am a servant willing to sacrifice myself for the glory of God and the well-being of others. It doesn't matter what happens to me as long as people are led to the Lord. You will bow before God and claim your unworthyness and His Son will say he or she followed Me and My example of greatness. The Great God will respond I see the great success of My Son. Well done!
There is nothing wrong with a desire to be great and successful as long as you define them by God's definition and example, much like Mordecai did!
Greatness and success are found in the service of God with a desire for other's well-being above your own!
