Micah 3:5 NASB95 Thus says the LORD concerning the prophets who lead my people astray; When they have something to bite with their teeth, They cry, “Peace,” But against him who puts nothing in their mouths They declare holy war.
The problem with the prophets in our text is that they preach the word based upon their own well-being. They do not preach the word in truth. Instead, they twist, pick, and choose, the word of God solely to bring about their desire. Their desire is not for people to come to Christ, or they would preach the word in context and in truth.
These prophets do not care for the flock they look to the flock for food. If the flock doesn't feed them then they devour the flock by preaching the word of war. They say the flock is not living Holy. This may be true in the flock's actions. It may also need to be preached but if the prophet is only preaching it for his satisfaction then the word is not preached in truth.
Then if the flock is seeking the well-being of the prophet He will preach the word of peace. Once again this is a true word. However, if the flock is living in sin then the word is not being preached in truth. It is being preached as a lie for the glory of the prophet.
The word of God is to be preached in context, in truth, in power, in compassion, in boldness, in love, in conviction, in edification, in allure, in righteousness, in Holiness, in the Spirit, against sin, for repentance, in mercy, in grace, and bringing Salvation in contrast to the hell of separation from God. It is not to build up man but to humble him. It is not to provide temporal wealth but to assure eternal life. The word of God points to the Word that became flesh so that we might live. Any use of the word by anyone for any purpose other than to glorify God, point to His Son, Jesus, and provide the assurance of The Holy Spirit, is sinful.
So to prophets, let's preach the word. 2 Timothy 4:2 NASB95 preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort, with great patience and instruction.
To the flock, receive the word for what it is. 1 Thessalonians 2:13 NASB95 For this reason we also constantly thank God that when you received the word of God which you heard from us, you accepted it not as the word of men, but for what it really is, the word of God, which also performs its work in you who believe.
To the lost be careful that you listen to the truth and not the twisted desires of a false prophet. 2 Timothy 4:3 NASB95 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but wanting to have their ears tickled, they will accumulate for themselves teachers in accordance to their own desires.
God said it is coming. It could be here now!
When they have something to bite with their teeth, They cry, “Peace,” But against him who puts nothing in their mouths They declare holy war.
Those who listen are only happy when their ears are tickled and they will feed the prophet who tickles their ears. It can be a dangerous circle.
Step out of the circle into new life. John 3:3 NASB95 Jesus answered and said to him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.”
John 3:16 NASB95 “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.
