Studies show that the average household mirror reflects around 90% of the image in front of it. The low side is about 85%, with the high side being about 95%.
This means that when looking in a mirror, you are getting a 5-15% distortion of what you are actually seeing. After doing the math, I figured out that I possibly look 37.5 pounds heavier to you than I do in the mirror.
If we transfer that to sin then we might say I am more filthy than I thought. 15% dirtier than I appear to be to myself. That is a lot of dirt or sin as we are equating sin to filth.
People say things like I think I am good enough. Maybe we need to reevaluate our reflection of ourselves.
Scripture explains there will be a day when we will see clearly. 1 Corinthians 13:12 NASB95 For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face; now I know in part, but then I will know fully just as I also have been fully known.
When we stand before God we will see Holy righteousness clearly for the first time. We will at that moment get a face-to-face look at God's righteous perfection and our unrighteous sin. The veil of reflection will be removed and we will fall to the ground in shame of ourselves and reverence of God. Every knee will bow. Every tongue will confess Jesus as Lord. God will wipe away the tears of those who have been washed in the blood and we will worship Him forever!
We must realize we only see a reflection today but God sees us clearly. This understanding will help us to realize the Holiness of God.
You are not as good as you think.
God is better than you think.
We see only a distorted reflection.
We would never drive down a busy interstate only using a mirror but we have no problem driving through life relying on our veiled reflective vision. Faith provides a much clearer sight than our eyes.
Place your faith in Jesus and understand that until the day we see face to face our best option to see is not two eyes looking through a veil into a mirror but faith looking through Jesus who is at the right hand of the Father.
