Do you take sin lightly? Before you answer that, have you ever laughed at sin under your breath? Have you ever posted a sin on social media? Have you ever bragged about sin? Have you ever said Lord forgive me and then continued on in the sin? Have you ever said pardon my mouth and then used filthy language or gossip?
Now I am sure some of you are immediately defending yourselves. Some are saying well, what you consider to be a sin, I do not! Well, let's look at how God describes sin. The word sin actually means to miss the mark. God has set the mark at righteousness, and anywhere outside of righteousness is sin. I describe it this way, "being out of the will of God is sin." No matter what you think, if it is not God's desire and will, then if you do it you have sinned. Paul says, "Whatever is not from faith is sin." He is saying if you are not committed to the truth that it is God's will then don't do it. If you have a smidge or a spec of doubt don't do it. It is sin for you.
Sin is serious and we are all guilty of it, but it is never something to jest over. God takes sin so seriously. Our text today says, Lamentations 2:2 NASB95 The Lord has swallowed up; He has not spared All the habitations of Jacob. In His wrath He has thrown down The strongholds of the daughter of Judah; He has brought them down to the ground; He has profaned the kingdom and its princes.
God is a forgiving God. He is also a just God. For every instance of His forgiveness, we must not forget that He has an equal instance of Justice! There is no sin that God forgives that Justice is not at the same time being poured out on God's atonement. Anytime you sin Jesus sufferd! Anytime you disregard sin as being an abomination then you are causing wrath to be poured out. Sin is so awful that wrath is not only poured out on Jesus. It is also poured out on those who refuse to accept the forgiveness brought on by the Justice that Jesus atoned for. Our text says the Lord has not spared all the inhabitants of Jacob. Even His chosen who refuse His Son are not spared from the wrath of Justice.
We, as Christians, must take sin seriously.
We all sin; however, when we do, we should not laugh at, ignore, or shrug it off as something we will be forgiven for. Instead, we should in disgust of that sin, seek forgiveness, praise the Lord for His humility and love. Then we should thank Him for His swallowing up on the cross the wrath of our sin. Then we should strive never to do that sin again. If we do then we should start over.
Remember, every time God forgives you your sin, He poured out wrath on His Son so justice could be fulfilled.
Your forgiveness cost Jesus His life!
His death gave you forgiveness!
His resurrection offers you life!
Sin is costly!!!! Don't take it lightly!
