Nicodemus was a Pharisee. He was well-respected and considered a leader among the Jews. He came to Jesus and admitted that the Pharisees knew something was different about Jesus. Nicodemus revealed, that we know you have come from God to teach us. We recognize this by all the signs. Yet as a Pharisee, he believed that Moses was the ultimate teacher until the Messiah would come. Moses revealed that the Lord would raise up another like him and that they should listen to Him. Moses by the words "listen to Him" reveals that He would be higher than Moses. In our text today Jesus reveals that Moses is referring to Him. John 3:13 NASB95 “No one has ascended into heaven, but He who descended from heaven: the Son of Man.
Jesus is revealing that what Moses taught he received on earth. The farthest Moses ascended during his earthly life was Mount Sinai. However, what Jesus, reveals is that He knows the nature of God and the words of God because, He has been in heaven with God. No one has ascended (except me) He who descended from heaven. He is the Son of Man. Both God and Man. He reveals who He is.
Jesus is telling Nicodemus, 'You have believed Moses; even more so, have faith in Me.' I am the one you have been looking for but you must trust in me.
Today so many people struggle with faith because God is out of the realm of our understanding. As Jesus describes to Nicodemus, this should even more so reveal that He was, is, and always will be, the Christ.
Nicodemus came and said we know you are a teacher from God.
However, that is not enough. We must believe, (commit to truth what we can't see), that Jesus is the Messiah, the Anointed Son of God, the Savior of the world, and allow His Lordship over us!
We see no sign that Nicodemus ever did this in scripture. He definitely respected Jesus, but did He surrender to Him?
We have many people today who don't even respect Him but claim Him as Lord. I have to wonder how you can freely surrender to Him whom you show no respect?
Faith, true, committed truth, Jesus is Savior and Lord. Repentance, is to turn from sin and look to the Lordship of Jesus.
Reverence, needs to be part of that or it isn't true surrender to The Savior and Lord!
