Esther 10:2 NASB95 And all the accomplishments of his authority and strength, and the full account of the greatness of Mordecai to which the king advanced him, are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Media and Persia?
Mordecai never sought his own glory. If we read through the book of Esther, we see that he always sought righteousness, obedience to God, and the safety of God's people. Nowhere do we see him seeking the name of Mordecai to be praised, recognized, or even remembered.
In our text, it says that he was advanced by the King, and the full account of his greatness was recorded. There are two ways of looking at this that show God.
1st. Mordecai did not seek glory for himself but showed the glory of God. He did this by doing what was right and trusting God to rescue His people.
I have heard people ask others the question. What would you want printed on your tombstone? I have thought about this. A tombstone is a marker to show that a person has lived and who he/she was. It will often include your name, the dates of birth and death, and additional information about the person. Like it might have a motorcycle engraved if that is what they are interested in. If the person was family-oriented, it might list the mother or father and have the children listed. Sometimes it will have their favorite scripture. It is there to say remember this person. I have thought that I would like my tombstone to have my date of birth and death. My life scripture, (although I have failed at it more than succeeded), and this saying, "A man that loves the Lord Jesus." No name except in the last sentence " A man that loves THE LORD JESUS." There is no need for me to be remembered except that I shared the Lord Jesus because I love Him. This is how I picture Mordecai, only more so. He didn't care if the people knew him or remembered him. He just wanted to live in the will of the Lord.
2nd. The scripture says, are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Media and Persia? I imagine that Mordecai was only concerned that his name be remembered by the King. Not remembered by King Ahasuerus, but remembered by and written in the book of THE KING his LORD. I think his hope was to hear Well done, good and faithful servant, you sought not your glory and your remembrance but God's glory.
So, looking at Mordecai, I ask, do you seek to be remembered by people on earth or the Lord God? Do you want your name written in the Lamb's book of life or stored in the congressional library? Do you need your name on your tombstone or just "whoever this person was, he/she loved the Lord Jesus"?
Like Mordecai, your name might be remembered any way as a means to teach people about Jesus. However, this is not what you should seek. What mankind should seek is that their life make people consider and surrender to the Lord Jesus!
Love, a man who loves the LORD JESUS.
