Isaiah 22:13-14 NASB1995 Instead, there is gaiety and gladness, Killing of cattle and slaughtering of sheep, Eating of meat and drinking of wine: “Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we may die.” But the Lord of hosts revealed Himself to me, “Surely this iniquity shall not be forgiven you Until you die,” says the Lord God of hosts.
Isaiah says, instead of repentance for sin, there is impenitence (lack of shame for one's actions). Instead of being broken (wearing sackcloth) for their sin, they celebrate it by having parties, eating, drinking, and being merry. They say let's have fun and please our flesh or carnal desires, because we will live today and die tomorrow.
The people Isaiah is talking about are Jews. They are relying on the covenant they have by being born of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Many today do the same counting on being born of Jesus.
This has been going on for not just decades but centuries and even millennia. People have had this mindset. It was happening during the time of Isaiah.
While God keeps His promise and the Israeli nation is kept secure, and even sees 144,000 saved out of the tribulation. They definitely have not lived according to the word of God.
Just as many in Jesus have eternal security, but refuse to live according to the word today.
Isaiah continues in the text saying, "The Lord of hosts revealed Himself to me." God has spoken to Isaiah in person, in his ear and Isaiah is about to share what God has said. "Surely this iniquity shall not be forgiven you Until you die."
He says I will keep my promise to you, but until the fulfillment of that promise at death, you will suffer the consequences of your sin.
Look at Israel and we can see this is true. They spent over 2000 years without possessing their homeland. During that time they were scattered, punished, mistreated, hated, and shunned. During that time they were treated horribly and even murdered in masses. This action has been called the Holocaust. Then, even since their reintroduction to their homeland, where they have had the opportunity to become a nation again, they have almost constantly been at war.
Now let's look at those who live this way under Christ. They have said I am saved in Jesus, therefore I will live according to my desire and not consider the sin, for I will be forgiven. The church has diminished in instruction of the Lord because of this thought since Pentecaust. Since the protestant reformation, just over 500 years ago we have seen a steady decline in Churches keeping to the word of God. Oh, the number of "Churches" may have grown, but their keeping of the word has not. This is because of a mindset of, "Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we may die.” God, through Isaiah, warns us of this as we just read, "Surely this iniquity shall not be forgiven you Until you die,” says the Lord God of hosts.
We need to realize that many have had this mindset at some point in their life, myself included. While living in this way, I suffered the biggest loss of my life. While many others have suffered the same loss while living for God, I am convinced it was meant to open my eyes to my sin. I pray that those who are living this way today will repent before they discover the truth of God's word.
I pray we all would realize that while God keeps His word. Which means salvation in Christ is secure. He also keeps His word that living with a Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we may die, attitude will bring about the promise of, "Surely this iniquity shall not be forgiven you Until you die."
This is not a promise from me or Isaiah, for the Lord makes it clear who it is from when the text reads, "says the Lord God of hosts."
Never forget that the phrase 'Lord of Hosts' is a military term meaning the Lord of Heaven's armies, who are prepared for battle against sin.
Praying for all to repent in heart and life.
