Esther 9:4 NASB95 Indeed, Mordecai was great in the king’s house, and his fame spread throughout all the provinces; for the man Mordecai became greater and greater.

If you know the truth of Mordecai you know there was nothing special about him. His name means little man. He was exiled from Israel. He was from the tribe of Benjamin, which was the smallest of the tribes. He was given the responsibility of raising a cousin who had lost her family. There was nothing about him that cried out leader. Nothing that people would look at and say that man will be great. Yet our text tells us indeed, Mordecai was great in the king’s house, and his fame spread throughout all the provinces; for the man Mordecai became greater and greater.

So what was different about Mordecai that he would be considered great and become greater and greater?

Let me give you three things.

He was dedicated to God alone.

He refused to do anything that would give glory to someone other than God. Esther 3:2 NASB95 All the king’s servants who were at the king’s gate bowed down and paid homage to Haman; for so the king had commanded concerning him. But Mordecai neither bowed down nor paid homage.

He didn't do any great thing. He was simply committed to worshipping God alone.

Next, when an attack came on him and the Jews, his faith in the Lord never failed.

Esther 4:14 NASB95 “For if you remain silent at this time, relief and deliverance will arise for the Jews from another place and you and your father’s house will perish. And who knows whether you have not attained royalty for such a time as this?”

He never doubted the salvation of the Lord.

Last, He never stopped doing his work. His responsibility was at the King's gate, and even in his mourning over the hardship that had come, he went to work. Esther 4:1-2 NASB95 When Mordecai learned all that had been done, he tore his clothes, put on sackcloth and ashes, and went out into the midst of the city and wailed loudly and bitterly. He went as far as the king’s gate, for no one was to enter the king’s gate clothed in sackcloth.

He might have been suffering, but he went back to work where he continually showed the first two things. He worshipped God alone, and he never doubted the salvation of the Lord.

Even when he was given honor and his enemy was forced to parade him through town, he immediately went back to work for the Lord. Esther 6:11-12 NASB95 So Haman took the robe and the horse, and arrayed Mordecai, and led him on horseback through the city square, and proclaimed before him, “Thus it shall be done to the man whom the king desires to honor.” Then Mordecai returned to the king’s gate. But Haman hurried home, mourning, with his head covered.

So this little man from the little tribe, who was exiled into another country, and who had to raise his cousin, was of no special kind. Yet he became greater and greater. Even though he didn't seek greatness, he received it. Simply because he worshipped only the Lord. He never doubted the Lord's salvation and He was always about the Lord's work.

He didn't care about greatness. His whole focus was on God.

Will God make you great if you do these things? I don't know the answer to that. However, I do know if you sincerely do these things, it won't matter to you if He does or doesn't, because you will have peace and security in the Lord!

Love Bro. Scott
