Romans 7:7-10 NASB95: What shall we say then? Is the Law sin? May it never be! On the contrary, I would not have come to know sin except through the Law; for I would not have known about coveting if the Law had not said, “YOU SHALL NOT COVET.” But sin, taking opportunity through the commandment, produced in me coveting of every kind; for apart from the Law sin is dead. I was once alive apart from the Law; but when the commandment came, sin became alive, and I died; and this commandment, which was to result in life, proved to result in death for me;

This passage is one of the most explanatory passages on the law and its revelation of sin. If there is no law, then no one knows what is expected, and therefore there is no sin. God, being righteous, has the law of righteousness displayed through who He is. Thus, when He created man. He, by His person, revealed righteousness and the standard or law. Through His righteousness, He revealed the law by His spoken word. Therefore, mankind understood the requirement and thus the law.

Then we see the safety of the innocence of a child. A child who lacks the ability to understand the law and his/her own accountability to be obedient to it is therefore not guilty of it. Paul says, I was once alive apart from the Law. When he was too young to understand, he was innocent of the law. Therefore, he was spiritually alive and protected by that innocence. However, he continues. "When the commandment came, sin became alive, and I died." Spiritually, he died to sin when he finally reached the understanding of accountability to the law. He understood that He was a sinner in need of a redeemer. He says, "This commandment, which was to result in life, proved to result in death for me." He now knew what was required to have Spiritual eternal life and realized that he did not meet the requirements.

What is man to do?

So he later asked this question, and revealed the answer. Romans 7:24-25 NASB95 Wretched man that I am! Who will set me free from the body of this death? Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, on the one hand I myself with my mind am serving the law of God, but on the other, with my flesh the law of sin.

With sin now understood and prevalent, causing a wretched man. Thanks be to God, who through the sinless Son (Jesus the Christ) I now have life.

Our God protects those who are not mentally capable of understanding. Yet holds us accountable who can. Then offers to pay the full price for any and all who will accept the gift of His Son. What a righteous, holy, and loving God, He is!
