In October 1918, 16 American soldiers went out in a foreign nation during World War 1 to capture a railroad. They found themselves under attack by a German patrol unit. They were able to capture the unit. However, as they continued on with their prisoners of war, the prisoners, realizing they were near the German forces' machine gun line, started hollering for help. As the machine guns opened fire. Almost immediately, 9 of the 16 were hit. 6 were killed and 3 were injured. Leaving only 7 men. The highest-ranking man left was a corporal. He had the 6 others guard the prisoners and fire upon the Germans while he made his way toward the machine guns. He kept picking off man after man while moving closer to the machine guns. The commander of the Germans, after emptying his weapon at this lone man and seeing many of his own men die by his opponent's accuracy, gave up. He surrendered 132 men plus all the guns rather than lose any more men. When back at camp with all the prisoners. The lone man, Corporal York, was asked Did you get the whole German army. He said only 132 of them.
He took out 30-plus machine guns and their operators. All the time telling them to surrender because he didn't want to kill any more than he had to.
When asked how he managed to overpower 150 plus men with 30 plus machine guns, he gave the glory to God. He said, "It is not man power. A higher power than man power guided and watched over me and told me what to do".
He was like a lamb among wolves relying on the shepherd.
Jesus sent out a group and told them this is how they must go out.
Luke 10:3 NASB95 “Go; behold, I send you out as lambs in the midst of wolves."
Later they would return and admit they never lacked for anything. They said even demons are subject to us in your name.
A lamb has no protection, NO DEFENSE, against a wolf, let alone a pack of wolves. They will die for sure except for their reliance on their shepherd.
When Christ sends us out, we must be completely surrendered to Him, or we will surrender to Satan. So many Christians fall and become discouraged and defeated because they seek to go out in their own strength.
You must realize you are like a lamb going against a pack of wolves. You cannot overpower, you cannot outsmart, you cannot out sneak, you cannot outmaneuver, you cannot outdevour, you cannot outrun, and you cannot win. All you can do is cry out to the Shepherd and allow Him to save you.
The easiest way to do this is to be like a lamb in complete trust and surrender to the Shepherd.
Jesus is sending you out like a lamb in the midst of wolves. However, He is the all-powerful shepherd who even the wolves must obey.
You go out empty handed in the hand of the Almighty and you will succeed. Remember God alone is a majority.
So, before you are sent, make sure you are completely surrendered to Christ. If you aren't, then you will surrender to the wolves of Satan!
