There is a legal principle known as "Ignorantia juris non excusat." It means ignorance of the law is no excuse. You can not plead ignorance in a court of law. However, God says there is a greater punishment for those who have accepted the law, have knowledge of it, lived by it, and then turned away from it.
Hebrews 10:29 NASB95 How much severer punishment do you think he will deserve who has trampled under foot the Son of God, and has regarded as unclean the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified, and has insulted the Spirit of grace?
God is speaking of those who have returned to Judaism after receiving Christ. They are, in essence, saying that the work of Christ was not enough. God says you are trampling underfoot the glorious work of Christ on the cross as being nothing, when it is everything.
People do this same thing today as they stop being dedicated to God and instead live for the world. They are, in essence, saying the grace of God is not enough.
Just a few weeks ago our President said something like he hoped he was doing enough to get into heaven. This statement told many of his lost followers that Jesus is not enough. He was, even if by ignorance, trampling underfoot the Son of God.
Many church members give a greater emphasis to things of the world than to God. They are showing their friends that they don't truly believe God is enough. Thus trampling underfoot the Son of God.
When you don't tithe, you are saying you don't think God is powerful enough to provide your needs. You are trampling underfoot the Son of God.
All of these things, when seen by people, look as if you are trampling underfoot Jesus. The writer of Hebrews says "How much severer punishment do you think he will deserve" who does this.
Ignorance is no excuse, but when you know and do it anyway, the person is deserving of a greater punishment. They have basically said the blood of the covenant by which I was sanctified, is not enough. If this is you, then you have insulted the Spirit of grace?
If you are thankful for God's grace, then don't insult it by trampling it underfoot. Instead, live like it is the greatest gift. Because it is. Grace was paid for by Christ and given to us freely through faith in Him.
Ignorance is no excuse. However, trampling with knowledge and yet a lack of faith are horrible and deserving of a more severe punishment!
