We must be careful not to trust our intelligence when our creator is omniscient.
Proverbs 30:2 NASB95 Surely I am more stupid than any man, And I do not have the understanding of a man.
Was this written by Solomon, the man of wisdom? It was either written or collected by him. By this form of agreement, he placed it in the proverbs. With all his wisdom his text says, Surely, I am more stupid than any man. Why would he of all people feel this way?
Proverbs 30:3 NASB95 Neither have I learned wisdom, Nor do I have the knowledge of the Holy One.
I can not comprehend the knowledge of the Holy One. He is beyond my understanding. In this statement, he shows his understanding of the being of our Lord. The greatest understanding of God is the understanding of Him not being understandable. God is so far above our ability of comprehension that we see ourselves as stupid.
He continues, Proverbs 30:4 NASB95 Who has ascended into heaven and descended? Who has gathered the wind in His fists? Who has wrapped the waters in His garment? Who has established all the ends of the earth? What is His name or His son’s name? Surely you know!
No mere man has ascended into heaven to gain understanding of God, nor descended to earth to explain Him with complete knowledge. No mere man has been present to get firsthand knowledge of God's control of the wind and the waters, nor His creation of the earth. However, He has revealed to us His name, Yahweh, and His Son's name, Jesus. Through His descent and ascension, all can know Him.
This was penned 700 years before the physical birth of the incarnate Christ. Yet, this knowledge and wisdom were given by God. So that without understanding man could recognize that He has given us the faith to know His Salvation. Jesus = Jehovah Saves!
How great our God is!
Proverbs 30:5-6 NASB95 Every word of God is tested; He is a shield to those who take refuge in Him. Do not add to His words Or He will reprove you, and you will be proved a liar.
Even in our lack, we can see the truth of the Holy Word. In testing after testing it is found to be correct. In it we find God. In God we find protection. We must be careful not to add our own beliefs to the word and call it truth as we will be proven a liar. Only in Him, through His word, is the complete truth found.
Proverbs 30:7-9 NASB95 Two things I asked of You, Do not refuse me before I die: Keep deception and lies far from me, Give me neither poverty nor riches; Feed me with the food that is my portion, That I not be full and deny You and say, “Who is the LORD?” Or that I not be in want and steal, And profane the name of my God.
The writer of our text seeks two things. He begs the God Most High please grant me these two desires.
1. Keep the lies away so I can see your truth.
2. Help me not to be proud in myself with great wealth nor sin in my weakness because of great poverty or need.
Lord, help me have faith placed in you so I don't get in the way, even in my weakness, and let you be shown righteous.
May we all pray and seek the glory of God in these verses!
Love Bro. Scott
