Genesis 49:1 NASB95 Then Jacob summoned his sons and said, “Assemble yourselves that I may tell you what will befall you in the days to come.
In our text today, we see Jacob about to die, and at his, weakest, he is showing the power and knowledge of God.
2 Corinthians 12:9-10 NASB95 And He has said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness.” Most gladly, therefore, I will rather boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may dwell in me. Therefore I am well content with weaknesses, with insults, with distresses, with persecutions, with difficulties, for Christ’s sake; for when I am weak, then I am strong.
Not relying on his own strength or knowledge, he brings together the brothers of the family (his twelve sons, the tribes of Israel) to hear what God has to tell them about their future. From their past he shows that God has something for each of them in the future. While still having to deal with the consequences of the past.
Is this not a picture of the church? A weak person chosen by God, allowing the strength of the Lord in all His knowledge, what they can expect, and what sins of the past they need to repent from.
Brothers and sisters assembling together forming one body to hear what the Lord has to tell them through one weak man relying on the power and knowledge of God.
God has revealed what will befall us in the coming days by His word. Many will fall away and cause others to stumble.
Some are like uncontrollable water. Verse 4.
Some are full of anger and vengeance they rely on their own will and have no forgiveness. Verse 6.
Some will follow God in faith, living in obedience and not depart until Jesus returns. Verse 10.
Some will dream of all the places to see and live through those who travel the world. Living alongside the worldly Verse 13.
Some will focus on work, believing in their strength, and they are safe. Verse 14.
Some will be judges like Samson they will hold others accountable to the straight and narrow while living the crooked. Verse 16
Some will live with a, do unto others as they do to you mentality. Not seeking God but their control.
Some are servants. Others are artistic, providing beauty, and yet still others help by growing some in the strength of the Lord with Bread and the fruit of the ground. They remain faithful to God in the service of others. Verses 20-26.
Last, some just survive in their fallen state. Verse 27.
But in all of this God offers them His word to bring all who will come to repentance. Spoken by the weak and dying but straight from the mouth of God in His strength and wisdom.
God has called all to church, even those who are living in sin, and He gives all a warning to turn back to their family that God desires in His presence.
The twelve tribes gathered like the church. Coming to God through Christ.
In the New Jerusalem, there will be twelve gates. Revelation 21:12 NASB95 It had a great and high wall, with twelve gates, and at the gates twelve angels; and names were written on them, which are the names of the twelve tribes of the sons of Israel.
Anyone from any area in which you have strayed can come back to God. Seek Jesus in faith and assemble together with the brothers. Simply because God has called you to assemble.
