Ephesians 5:11-12 NASB95: Do not participate in the unfruitful deeds of darkness, but instead even expose them; for it is disgraceful even to speak of the things which are done by them in secret.
Have you ever found yourself sharing sinful things you have done in the past? However, as you speak of them, or look back at your words later, you almost feel as if you were bragging about them. I know I am guilty of this.
Why would we Christians brag about things we have done which are not Godly? It is our flesh. At that moment, we are allowing our natural sinful desires to take control. We say we would never do this now because we are stronger in Christ, but we laugh at them or share them as if they are funny. Sin is never funny. We think that we are better because we will not participate in that sin again. After all, the word of God says, "Do not participate in the unfruitful deeds of darkness."
Then we attempt to justify talking about them because the word of God says, "Instead, even expose them." The word translated expose is better translated as reprove, rebuke, or admonish. It means to correct them.
Realizing that, we must not brag about the sinful and unfruitful acts, but we must discredit them by revealing their harm, danger, and consequences.
The text goes on to say, "It is disgraceful even to speak of the things which are done by them in secret." It is shameful to even talk about what sinners do in the dark.
So what we learn from this text, and what helps us to live our life better today, is this: If we are allowing God control of our life, then when we speak of sin, which we are involved in, we should feel and speak with shame. After all, how can we brag or laugh at something that took the life of our Lord? Plus, when there is no true shame for our sin, we are testifying to new believers and the lost that sin is not serious.
I did this earlier this week. I felt the Lord say Don't share. I did anyway. I was convicted by Him not to laugh. I did anyway. I was convicted immediately with sorrow and shame for being disobedient and for sharing a horrible testimony. I have promised my Lord that I will share with that person, that I am sorry for my sinful behavior and for my horrible testimony. Right now, I am rejoicing in God for His forgiveness, His mercy, and His grace. I am praying, asking Him to help me, strengthen me, and guide me, to not ever speak of sin except to rebuke it. Especially in my past life.
Scripture is the greatest revealer of Jesus. It allows us to follow Him closely as His disciples. If we will read, dig into, and apply it with the help of understanding by the Holy Spirit.
