Revelation 20:12 NASB95 And I saw the dead, the great and the small, standing before the throne, and books were opened; and another book was opened, which is the book of life; and the dead were judged from the things which were written in the books, according to their deeds.

The dead in this text does not refer to those who have died a physical death and live an eternal life. It instead refers to those who have died a spiritual death. As they stand before the throne, the book of life will be opened, and their name will be searched for, but it will not be found. Because their name is not found written in the book of life, there will be another search done. Here they will be judged according to their deeds.

Scripture makes it clear that there are no deeds a person can do to overcome the wages of sin.

James 2:10 NASB95 For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles in one point, he has become guilty of all.

Romans 3:10 NASB95 as it is written, “THERE IS NONE RIGHTEOUS, NOT EVEN ONE;

There is only one way to be judged righteous, and that is to have your name in the book of life. This is done by faith in Christ. He did the only work capable of overcoming the wages of sin.

You do not want to be kneeling at the throne and here someone say "his/her name is not here. This is because that is your only chance of eternal life.

Ephesians 2:5-10 NASB95 even when we were dead in our transgressions, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), and raised us up with Him, and seated us with Him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, so that in the ages to come He might show the surpassing riches of His grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.

Christ did the work. If you place your faith in Him, then your name will be found!
