1 John 5:3-4 NASB95 For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments; and His commandments are not burdensome. For whatever is born of God overcomes the world; and this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith.
Mankind has attempted to reduce love to simply an emotion, but it is so much more. Love is determined. You can decide to love. If you strive to love because you decide to love then you will take loving action. Our text says this is the love of God. That we keep His commandments. The love of God is empty and not actually love if His commandments are not kept. You do not love what you do not seek the betterment of! You do not live in love with God when you live in opposition to His perfect and Holy will.
The text continues: His commandments are not burdensome. It is not a burden to live according to the commandments of God if you love Him. It actually burdens you when you do not keep His commandments. Clarke makes this statement. No man is burdened with the duties which his own love imposes. Love feels no loads. Love to God brings strength from God; through his love and his strength, all his commandments are not only easy and light, but pleasant and delightful.
The text says, For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. The only begotten of the Father overcame the world by defeating death and rising to life at the right hand of the Father. Listen to the words spoken by the Son of God. Jesus said in, John 14:31 NASB95 but so that the world may know that I love the Father, I do exactly as the Father commanded Me. Get up, let us go from here.
Jesus had earlier made the same claim for love toward Him, as we have seen in love toward the Father. Look at John 14:15 NASB95 “If you love Me, you will keep My commandments.
For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. John 3:5-7 NASB95 Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. “That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. “Do not be amazed that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’
John 16:33 NASB95 “These things I have spoken to you, so that in Me you may have peace. In the world you have tribulation, but take courage; I have overcome the world.”
The text finishes with. This is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith.
Ephesians 2:8 NASB95 For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God.
Ephesians 3:17-19 NASB95 so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; and that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled up to all the fullness of God.
Faith is the victory that overcomes and love is the power by which God fills us with the desire to keep His commandments.
1 John 5:3-4 NASB95 For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments; and His commandments are not burdensome. For whatever is born of God overcomes the world; and this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith.
It was once said, how necessary is it that a man should love the holy blessed God! For he can bring no other worship to God than love; and whoever loves Him, and worships Him from a principle of love, to him the holy blessed God calls His beloved."
By faith in the Son of God, a man is able to overcome all that is in the world. By his Love for God, he lives in faith.
1 John 4:19 NASB95 We love, because He first loved us.
