1 Peter 2:23 NASB95 and while being reviled, He did not revile in return; while suffering, He uttered no threats, but kept entrusting Himself to Him who judges righteously;
Verse 21 of this chapter says Christ is our example. Then he explains the example Christ left for us.
What an example this is! Most people are reviled daily. To be reviled is to be talked down to. It is to be insulted and made a mockery of. It is to not be shown kindness, compassion, respect, or love. People will treat you in an unfriendly manner. They might act as if you are not there or as if you are of no importance.
It is extremely difficult when someone treats you this way to, in return, not talk down to them. Instead to speak to them in a manner of placing them on the level they feel they are on. It is difficult to be insulted and not insult back. Instead, to complement them in kindness. It is difficult to be made a mockery of and speak back in a way that builds up instead of tearing down. It is difficult to not be shown kindness, compassion, respect, love but to the turn around and show that very person these things from you.
It is difficult, but it is the example Christ shows us, and it is possible in His power.
We revile Christ when we respond to others reviling with revile of our own.
In doing so, we cause His suffering! Yet in His suffering, He uttered no threats to or at us. In return, we in His power can do the same to those who lie, curse, threaten, cheat, steal, and ridicule us. We have to do the same as Christ if we are to follow His example. We must entrust ourselves to Him who judges righteously.
When we do this, we are following a great example which Christ has given us in providing Himself as a sinless sacrifice for our salvation. Plus, we are offering ourselves as a living sacrifice to show those who do these things how to find Christ. Our example shows them Jesus.
It is not easy, but it is more than doable thanks to the fact that Christ did it as an example for us!
