Nahum 2:2 NASB95 For the LORD will restore the splendor of Jacob Like the splendor of Israel, Even though devastators have devastated them And destroyed their vine branches.
Nahum prophesied of the destruction of Nineveh and his prophecy was fulfilled years later. However, all Scripture provides a picture that reveals Christ, and we can see it in this verse.
It is amazing how God has someone describe the destruction of Nineveh and at the same time point to Jesus as Lord and Savior of our lives today.
The text says, For the LORD will restore the splendor of Jacob.
The Father of the twelve tribes of Israel is Jacob. Jacob describes his sojourn on the earth in Genesis 47:9 as few and unpleasant. Jesus, time on earth was but 33 few and unpleasant years as He sojourned on earth from His home in heaven. Jacob spent a portion of his time working for his bride paying the price to purchase her. During that time he was cheated and mistreated. Jesus spent three years of his time being mistreated and tortured to purchase His bride the church.
In Genesis 32:28 God changes Jacob's name to Israel. Which literally means, God prevails. Jesus (God the Son) prevailed as He rose from the dead to live forevermore. Our text today says, For the LORD will restore the splendor of Jacob Like the splendor of Israel.
Jesus who willingly sojourned in a foreign place for the purchase of His bride (the church) rose from the dead to prevail as God the Son.
The nation of Israel had been in captivity but would be released to come back to the promise land. And its enemy would be utterly destroyed (Nineveh). However, they have never been the same, as their tribes are lost and their ancestry records destroyed. Along with the temple in 70 AD. They no longer have proof of their tribe.
Our text says. Even though devastators have devastated them And destroyed their vine branches.
We see this in Israel but we also see it in the Church, as Satan continues to attack the local Church. Membership in a local church is becoming a thing of the past. It was seen as important because it is taught in scripture. It is now seen as unnecessary as Satan continues his attack and twists scripture attempting to liberalize what scripture teaches. The church is now being devastated by false teachers who come in focused on everything but the word of God. Many don't even understand the meaning of Christian (Christ follower). They think that you can have Jesus as Savior while not having Him as Lord. Lord meaning owner, master. Romans 10:9 says, "that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved;"
Confess Jesus as Lord not as Savior.
We cannot confess Jesus as Savior unless He is your Lord. We confess Jesus as Lord, believing in your heart, and then you will be saved (He becomes our Savior). Jesus told His disciples to "follow me." A Christian is a Christ follower.
The church is under attack and devastators have devastated them And destroyed their vine branches.
I love how Nahum led by God prophesied about the destruction of Nineveh and the restoration of Israel. While describing Jesus and His Church. In this, we also see that Jesus wins in His return and those who are part of the church (Christ followers) will be His bride in the promise land.
Praying we will all be part of the wedding feast in Heaven.
