Psalm 4:4 NASB95 Tremble, and do not sin; Meditate in your heart upon your bed, and be still. Selah.
David, speaking in this Psalm, is telling the people who are angry about his blessings and honor given by God. Those who wonder why God would choose a Shepherd. Those who don't realize that God can choose whomever he chooses and that God sees the Spirit of men.
David says to them, "Tremble," that is to quiver in anger or fear. He is saying go ahead and be frustrated, upset, or anxious about what God has, is, and will do, but don't let this turn into sin.
You may contemplate and have feelings that you can not stop, but if you do not act upon them, then you are heading in the right direction. He says, "Tremble, and do not sin."
By not acting, you are heading in the right direction, but it still can become sin unless you address it.
What this is saying is, not acting upon your emotion is good but not addressing and allowing it to continue is still sin, even if you don't act upon it.
David continues, Meditate in your heart upon your bed, and be still. Meditate means to contemplate, say to oneself, or to pray. David says to do this in your heart or Spirit. He says Do this upon your bed. I know for me some of my closest moments with God come during the night, while I am resting. When I am not focused on everything but have a clear mind, it is then that God often answers my questions, prayers, and fulfills my understanding. I think this is what David is saying because then he adds Selah which means to rest, pause, and take a breath.
Doing this is righteous and will cure our tremors of anger or fear. In fact, David says this in the next verse. Psalm 4:5 NASB95 Offer the sacrifices of righteousness, And trust in the LORD.
David says stop wondering, stop worrying, stop being angry. If you do the above, you will be blessed by the Lord and be able to just trust in Him, then you won't sin.
Psalm 4:4 NASB95 Tremble, and do not sin; Meditate in your heart upon your bed, and be still. Selah.
