Micah 6:7-8 NASB95 Does the LORD take delight in thousands of rams, In ten thousand rivers of oil? Shall I present my firstborn for my rebellious acts, The fruit of my body for the sin of my soul? He has told you, O man, what is good; And what does the LORD require of you But to do justice, to love kindness, And to walk humbly with your God?
Without the redemption of Jesus through His shed blood on the cross and His resurrection from the grave, the only way to God is perfection. This is to be 100 percent without sin. Being born of the flesh, born of man this is simply not possible. Thus we have the need for Jesus.
In our text today, Micah speaks of man's effort to please God. Man has this idea that pleasing God is earning salvation. Once again, this is impossible, thus we have the need for Jesus. Micah is saying we can sacrifice 1000 rams, provide 10,000 rivers of oil, and our firstborn, and it will not be enough.
Micah is saying Instead of all of this what is good in the eyes of the Lord is "to do justice, to love kindness, And to walk humbly with your God."
The word, good, means pleasing. Jesus tells us that only God is good. So to be pleasing to God we must be like God. Remember that He made us in His image.
We do this by doing justice. Justice means to be legally right with the law. An example of this today would be when the speed limit is 70 you never go 71 or above. This is right and inside the law. This is good or pleasing to God
Love kindness. Kindness means to keep the covenant of God's blessings. His greatest blessing is His presence. This is what we lose in sin. When we sin we lose the blessing of His presence. We should love, desire, strive for, and seek His presence. This is to love kindness, but instead, we do not always love kindness as we often seek after sin.
Last is to walk humbly with our God. This means to see ourselves as God's creation while recognizing His position as the Creator. The pot does not tell the potter how to make it. Instead, the potter creates the pot for His purpose. We have no right to claim any authority over our God.
None of these provides us with salvation, thus the need for Jesus. They do, however, please God when we strive to live this way.
Do not turn His grace into licentiousness as Jude speaks of.
Jude 1:4 NASB95 For certain persons have crept in unnoticed, those who were long beforehand marked out for this condemnation, ungodly persons who turn the grace of our God into licentiousness and deny our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ.
Instead, be pleasing to God, as His scripture tells us. John 3:16 NASB95 “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.
We can't purchase or work our way into salvation through sacrifice or offering even ourselves. Plus that is not pleasing to God. However, what is pleasing is "to do justice, to love kindness, And to walk humbly with your God."
