This too shall pass, and it shall come to pass has become one common phrase in modern English: "this too shall come to pass."
It shall come to pass is a biblical phrase that guarantees the fulfillment of God's word.
This too shall pass comes from an ancient Persian tale about King Solomon. He had tasked his wisemen with finding a statement that would make a happy man sad, and a sad man happy. They brought him a ring with the inscription "Gam gozarad" in English this statement is, "This too shall pass."
Solomon would wear the ring as a reminder that, in all his success, that his pride and fortune were fleeting. There is no need to attempt to hold on to it. It will soon be gone. However, in hard times of grief, it reminded him that his pain was also temporary. Good times and success would follow.
Unfortunately, Solomon soon realized that while his saying is often true, it has no guarantee.
This saying became famous as Abraham Lincoln used it in a speech in 1859. In which after using this phrase he said: "Let us hope, rather, that by the best cultivation of the physical world, beneath and around us; and the intellectual and moral world within us, we shall secure an individual, social, and political prosperity and happiness, whose course shall be onward and upward, and which, while the earth endures, shall not pass away." Unfortunately, we been more like Nebuchadnezzar than Abraham Lincoln.
Nebuchadnezzar, felt he had enough power to override Solomon s saying but he also felt like he could overcome God's word.
He didn't accept that God's word has a guarantee.
While sleeping one night God gave him a dream. He called for Daniel who revealed God's words from the dream. The king would spend 7 years living as a beast in the wild. Daniel warned the king to please recognize the way of the Lord, but he refused. Nebuchadnezzar then reveals what happened to him 12 months later. Daniel 4:30-31 NASB95 “The king reflected and said, ‘Is this not Babylon the great, which I myself have built as a royal residence by the might of my power and for the glory of my majesty?’ “While the word was in the king’s mouth, a voice came from heaven, saying, ‘King Nebuchadnezzar, to you it is declared: sovereignty has been removed from you.
At that instance God's word came to pass.
After the seven periods of time ended, Nebuchadnezzar with his own words tells of his restoration.
Daniel 4:34 “But at the end of that period, I, Nebuchadnezzar, raised my eyes toward heaven and my reason returned to me, and I blessed the Most High and praised and honored Him who lives forever; For His dominion is an everlasting dominion, And His kingdom endures from generation to generation.
Don't be like Solomon and Nebuchadnezzar. They had to suffer because they refused to trust God's words. Instead learn from their experience.
John 3:18 NASB95 “He who believes in Him is not judged; he who does not believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
Lord, I pray all will believe in Jesus who is the only way. I pray they will realize it is not This too shall pass, or this too shall come to pass."
Instead, it is as God's word says, then it shall come to pass!
Lord, since we seem to follow Nebuchadnezzar instead of Lincoln, let us please follow him into your praise, as your word says, Daniel 4:37: “Now I, Nebuchadnezzar, praise, exalt and honor the King of heaven, for all His works are true and His ways just, and He is able to humble those who walk in pride.”
In Jesus name, let it be, Amen!
Love, Brother Scott.
