John 2:7 NASB95 Jesus said to them, “Fill the waterpots with water.” So they filled them up to the brim.
Six huge stone water pots used for purification. Cleansing oneself after being declared unclean. Allowing them to join in with the others in worship and fellowship.
Look at the picture this gives us. Scripture says Jesus came to fulfill the law. The law explains how to remain or to become cleansed. The purification pots were used for this purpose, and Jesus says, "Fill the pots with water." He refers to Himself as living water. The fact that the pots were stone, was not lost on the Jews. Stone was used instead of pottery to represent running or living water, as a brook or river runs over stones, cleansing the water.
The purification pot was ordered full by the living water that fulfilled the law of purification.
Notice the pots were not partially filled; the scripture says they filled them up to the brim. The word translated brim means there was not a portion of the pot that was not filled with water. Water was on the top of the pot. It was filled to overflowing. Jesus didn't just come to take care of the very bottom of the law. Jesus didn't come to take care of the middle or three-quarters of the law. Jesus came to fulfill all of the law. It was filled to the brim, overflowing so that nothing was left to be cleansed by the purification of Jesus.
Our text goes on to say that when the servants took the water turned into wine to the head of the ceremony, he tasted it and responded. John 2:10 NASB95 and said to him, “Every man serves the good wine first, and when the people have drunk freely, then he serves the poorer wine; but you have kept the good wine until now.”
The law was good in that it revealed the need, but Jesus is better in that He fulfilled the need. The purification by water only lasted for a short time, and you are unclean again, but the purification of Jesus lasts for eternity. God had kept the good until now. At the perfect time, in the fullness of time, redemption would save eternally! Galatians 4:4-5 NASB95 But when the fullness of the time came, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the Law, so that He might redeem those who were under the Law, that we might receive the adoption as sons.
Jesus didn't just take care of a problem at a wedding; He revealed what He had come for.
Have you accepted the good and perfect cleansing of purification by the living water?
Have you tasted of the good living water?
Jesus took care of the wedding in Cana. Incidentally, Cana means the place of the reed, and Scripture says in Matthew 12:20-21 NASB95: “A BATTERED REED HE WILL NOT BREAK OFF, AND A SMOLDERING WICK HE WILL NOT PUT OUT, UNTIL HE LEADS JUSTICE TO VICTORY. “AND IN HIS NAME THE GENTILES WILL HOPE.”
He didn't break off the reed because His time had not yet come. Instead, He revealed how He would lead justice to victory, and His name, Jesus (Jehovah's Salvation), would give gentiles hope.
The living water of purification sure tastes good.
I am praying you taste Him today!
