Joel 3:15-16 NASB1995 The sun and moon grow dark And the stars lose their brightness. The Lord roars from Zion And utters His voice from Jerusalem, And the heavens and the earth tremble. But the Lord is a refuge for His people And a stronghold to the sons of Israel.
The sun and the moon go dark and the stars fade away. It is the perfect time for evil to strike. Darkness hides from light, so when light is not around, darkness goes on the prowl. However, the text says the Lord roars from Zion and utters His voice from Jerusalem.
In the Chronicles of Narnia, CS Lewis uses a lion (Aslan) to represent Jesus. God often uses things we are familiar with to describe Himself to us.
Studies show a lion roars to warn others about entering his territory and to warn them he is ready to fight to protect his pride (pack of lionesses and cubs). Then, he often lets out grunts at the end, calling his pride to him. He prefers to roar at night when his roar goes out further in the darkness of night.
When darkness reigns, our text reveals to us Jesus comes as the light roaring like a lion, warning others that He will protect His people. The Lord is a refuge for His people. Then all the evil will tremble at the King of Kings warning. The heavens and the earth tremble. Isn't it great to know that our King has never been defeated? He took on the enemy in our place and when they killed Him. Then He walked out of that grave alive forever. He protects us and will never be defeated. The Lion is called the King of the Jungle. Our King, however, is the King of Kings. When He roars, everything shakes, but when He utters His voice, then His children come running, never to be attacked by evil again. If you are not a child of the King, come to Him before it is too late. He is ready to adopt you and protect you when darkness comes.
He is the light and at His presence darkness flees. He is uttering His voice; it cries out, "Come to me, I will be your stronghold."
Come into His family. The King of Kings is calling your name and darkness is scared.
