Amos 9:2 NASB95 — “Though they dig into Sheol, From there will My hand take them; And though they ascend to heaven, From there will I bring them down.
There will come a time in the tribulation that people will be so tired of the torture of their earthly life, they will desire to die, but they can not find death. Revelation 9:6 NASB95 And in those days men will seek death and will not find it; they will long to die, and death flees from them.
Yet in our text today, Amos writes of a time of the Jews seeking to escape from the life that their sin of idol worship, or in other words, their placing of things before God, has created. They decided their sinful desire was more pleasant than the will of the Lord. However, after living for years in their sinful desire, they found themselves joyless, without peace, and having a desire to die.
Life apart from God is not life but death.
Our text says, even if they dig their grave in Sheol or in the earth, I will bring them back. Even if they flee to the heavens, attempting to hide under the disguise of religion, I will bring them down.
There is no hiding from God. Living in sin will cause a separation from the manifestation of God, but He still sees all and will pour out His wrath on sin. You can't even hide in death.
Revelation 20:13 NASB95 And the sea gave up the dead which were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead which were in them; and they were judged, every one of them according to their deeds.
This verse speaks of those who are dead without Christ. However, if you have Christ and live in your sin, you will still stand before Him, revealing your sin. 1 Thessalonians 4:16 NASB95 For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first.
So whether Jew or Gentile, saved or lost, we will come before the Lord.
It is great to be covered in Christ's righteous blood, providing Salvation. However, in this life, we still sin. This will grieve the Holy Spirit and cause us to desire to hide. If this is you realize you can't hide from the Lord, even in death. So it is better to live in the power of God, seeking not to sin.
Walk in the light, seeking not to sin, instead of the darkness seeking to do the impossible. You can't hide sin from God.
