2 Chronicles 23:16 NASB95 Then Jehoiada made a covenant between himself and all the people and the king, that they would be the LORD’S people.

Jehoiada was the priest who had protected Joash the king until such time as they could anoint him king. He was dedicated to following the Lord and led the people and the King to do so, too. However, after his death, the people and the King were no longer as dedicated to the covenant that Jehoiada had made. Jehoiada and Joash are good examples of why are guidance needs to be to get people to follow the Lord and not us. There is no doubt in scripture that with Jehoiada there was a true desire to follow Yahweh. However, the method did not remove themselves and instead gave them more recognition.

There is a need for leadership, so chaos will not ensue, but if the leadership is not consistently seeking God and pointing the followers that way, then the chaos will come when the leader is no more. Notice the covenant was made by Jehoiada. He initiated it. He set it up. And when he was no more neither was the covenant. God is eternal; therefore, if He initiates the covenant and makes it with the people and the people follow the covenant, it will last because its leader is eternal without beginning or ending.

We often have good INTENTIONS FOR the Lord, but they are ours. It is our good OBEDIENCE TO the Lord and FROM the Lord that will be successful.

If we want to be the LORD'S PEOPLE, then we need to follow HIS COVENANT and not ours or someone else's!

Love Bro. Scott
