Romans 14:23 NASB95 But he who doubts is condemned if he eats, because his eating is not from faith; and whatever is not from faith is sin.
This verse comes at the end of the chapter, speaking of eating meat on occasion, where someone else sees it as a sin. The summary of these verses is do not cause a brother to stumble by your freedom. Then we come to our verse which first tells you that if you are unsure but you follow others in your unsurity then you are in sin. Because you are not following in faith, and scripture tells us in Hebrews 11:6 NASB95 And without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is and that He is a rewarder of those who seek Him.
Whatever you do outside of your faith in God is not pleasing to Him. This is because you are doing it to please yourself. Our text says,
"Whatever is not from faith is sin." What is sin? It is not living in faith. Faith is committing what is unknown to truth. It is KNOWING what is unknown. Scripture describes faith in Hebrews 11:1 NASB95 Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. Committing what is not seen to assurance.
The world says When I see it I will believe it.
God says believe it and then I will show it to you.
When you have the conviction of the Spirit and you do not follow by faith then you sin.
Do not be condemned by your doubt and actions of pleasing the world. Instead in faith please God by following the conviction (guidance) of the Holy Spirit.
You can do this in one form by Sharing the Way. Jesus said I am the Way (John 14:6). He also commands us to preach (proclaim) the Gospel of the way. Mark 16:15 NASB95 And He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation.
Do you live by faith or do you live in sin?
Romans 14:23 NASB95 — But he who doubts is condemned if he eats, because his eating is not from faith; and whatever is not from faith is sin.
