Colossians 2:6-7 NASB95 Therefore as you have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, having been firmly rooted and now being built up in Him and established in your faith, just as you were instructed, and overflowing with gratitude.
The struggle of many Christians is that they have shallow roots (faith) that spread across the surface of many godly things but do not go deep into Christ.
The anchor of their salvation should be Christ yet they rely on their good works to anchor them. When they falter in good works, as a storm comes into their life, the wind blows against them, and they fall like a giant tree.
This tree is laid out for many to see and wonder if Christianity is all we claim it to be.
Paul says walk in Christ. Which is to live accordingly, with the good godly works of Christ. However, don't place your roots (faith) in the works but have them firmly rooted in Him (Jesus). A tree that is firmly rooted deep in the soil will not fall and can thus grow tall being built up in the nourishment of the soil.
A Christian firmly rooted by faith in Christ will be nourished by Christ and can be built tall on Him with a firm foundation. It therefore provides good works, like shade from the scorching sun and shelter from the howling wind. This Christian will be overflowing with gratitude for Christ, who they are rooted in.
The one who is rooted in their good works will constantly be struggling attempting to stay upright and wondering why they are not at peace in the storm.
Both provide good works but the one rooted in the good works falls. The one rooted in Christ does greater works because they stand firm in faith connecting them to the firm foundation of Jesus.
Is your faith shallow? Is it growing across the surface a few feet deep into good works? If so prepare for your fall?
Is your faith deep? Is it rooted in your anchor? Is it set upon the firm foundation of Jesus? If so, watch your works grow even greater because you will not fall, and you will consistently and constantly be nurished by Jesus.
That, brings overflowing gratitude!
Love Bro. Scott
