Jeremiah 4:4 NASB1995 Circumcise yourselves to the Lord And remove the foreskins of your heart, Men of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem, Or else My wrath will go forth like fire And burn with none to quench it, Because of the evil of your deeds.”

God gave Abram a sign of the covenant that on the eighth day after birth, they would circumcise the male child. As with many of God's commands, it had a spiritual and a physical side to it. Both were always for our well-being and the glory of God.

Circumcision was a spiritual sign of obedience showing a desire to follow God even when it meant physical pain. This shows that in our Spirit we place our faith in the fact that God desires nothing but the best for us. Any of us who have ever had a child suffer knows that it is more painful than our own suffering. Then there is a physical side. While circumcision has many physical benefits, the greatest is it diminishes the chance of infection. It cuts away the foreskin that, if not cleaned properly, is a breeding ground for bacteria, which causes infection. In our text, Jeremiah says circumcise yourself to the Lord. He then explains we do this by cutting away the foreskin of our heart. This is to remove ourselves from the bacteria of sin that will infect us. Don't leave a place for this bacteria of sin to fester and grow. We must do this by removing areas where sin likes to attach itself in our lives. If we don't the Lord says My wrath will go forth like fire And burn with none to quench it. We must be careful not to live in ways that allow sin to fester. The way to do this, and it is the only way, is to surrender to the saving Lordship of Jesus. John 14:6 NASB1995 Jesus *said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.

Jesus is the way.

If we are not willing to circumcise our heart, the center of our being with Christ, then as our text says, we will experience the Lord's wrath.

Simply because of our evil deeds.

Circumcise your heart.

Cut away the places that breed sin.

You can only do this in the power of Christ.
