Esther 10:3 NASB95 For Mordecai the Jew was second only to King Ahasuerus, and great among the Jews and in favor with his many kinsmen, one who sought the good of his people and one who spoke for the welfare of his whole nation.
We know from chapter two that Mordecai came from the line of Kish.
This line produced King Saul, whose family was lost except for a crippled grandchild named Mephibosheth. So Saul's kingly descendants no longer existed. (2 Samuel 21)
We also know from 1 Samuel 9:21 that Kish and his family were nobodies from the least tribe, which was Benjamin. Yet Mordecai the Jew was second only to King Ahasuerus, and great among the Jews.
What is it that caused Mordecai to be the type of man that would be raised to second to the King in a foreign country? Of course, many will say, well, first it was his cousin's beauty. However, they must realize that it took more than beauty for her to become Queen. She did all things right. She listened to her cousin; she took wise counsel from the people over her. She was in all ways beautiful inside and out, both spiritual and physical. Much of this would be thanks to her cousin's leadership of her.
We know this as scripture reveals it. We see the same kind of person in Mordecai. In fact, our text says that Mordecai was great among the Jews and in favor with his many kinsmen. It also says that he was one who sought the good of his people and one who spoke for the welfare of his whole nation.
It is easy to see that Mordecai was a Godly man. He was a prophetic picture of the attributes of God revealed in the flesh through Jesus our Lord and Savior.
Jesus was the greatest among the Jews, yet many Jews were only concerned with what he might do to make their physical lives better at the present moment. Jesus spent time teaching his loved ones the ways of a righteous God. He was a great leader. He even led many other nations. We see the resemblance of Mordecai to Jesus in this as well. Mordecai was second in command over a Gentile nation. Jesus came for all, no matter their nation. Jesus sought the good of all.
Mordecai was not pre-incarnate Jesus, but by obeying God, he was able to show people a picture of Jesus.
This should encourage us today. We can do the same. You do not have to be a descendant of a famous person because when you are adopted into the family of God you are heir to Him. When you follow Him you show caring for all others.
In other words you are showing the world Jesus.
Another resemblance is Mordecai didn't hesitate to speak the truth. Jesus is the truth. We follow the truth.
In other words be bold in the truth of your testimony.
Mordecai was a nobody who showed His world somebody who would save the world.
He showed Jesus! So can we!
