Zechariah 6:11-13 NASB95 “Take silver and gold, make an ornate crown and set it on the head of Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest. “Then say to him, ‘Thus says the LORD of hosts, “Behold, a man whose name is Branch, for He will branch out from where He is; and He will build the temple of the LORD. “Yes, it is He who will build the temple of the LORD, and He who will bear the honor and sit and rule on His throne. Thus, He will be a priest on His throne, and the counsel of peace will be between the two offices.”’
Making a priest-king was not done in Israel. Yet here the prophet Zechariah reveals that God is saying to do so. So as to proclaim who the Messiah would be. Set a crown on the high priest, saying that the Messiah will be both priest and king. Then he reveals that God says that He will be known as the Branch.
Isaiah 4:2 NASB95: In that day the Branch of the LORD will be beautiful and glorious, and the fruit of the earth will be the pride and the adornment of the survivors of Israel.
He will branch out. No longer will the High Priest nor the King be only for Israel, but will encompass the whole world. God's protection and salvation are available for everyone. Zechariah is prophesying Salvation being available to us today. Jesus came and is both King and High Priest. He came from Israel. He sprouted not from the root of David the King but from the root of Jesse, a shepherd and a nobody from Bethlehem.
Yes, it is He who will build the temple of the LORD, and He who will bear the honor and sit and rule on His throne. Thus, He will be a priest on His throne.
The temple is built in the body of the believer, and He is honored in us as He sits on the throne and guides us in the way of the Lord. From the throne, He is King and rules over us as we are residents of the Kingdom of God.
Thus, He will be a priest on His throne, and the counsel of peace will be between the two offices.”
Where else can you find both the Priest and the King be at peace with equal rule? It only happens when the Priest and the King are God. One God ruling in the Spirit.
Just like it would take an act of God for a fish to live out of water. It would take God for this to happen. Yet it did with Jesus. That is because He is God.
No puzzle fits together as tightly as Scripture.
Trust Scripture. Trust Jesus. Trust the Holy Spirit's guidance. Give your crown to Jesus, the High Priest and King!
